Eisenstein created his ‘zoological theatre of modern life’. Many images in Eisenstein’s bestiary were borrowed from Grandville: academics represented as ravens; matriarchs as ducks and cows; dandies as frogs, cocks, and peacocks; high officials as donkeys, goats, bulls, and rhinoceroses; coquettes as ostriches; schoolboys as pigs, rats, and hares.
