Fleck studied art in Vienna before moving to Taos in 1925. He exhibited at most of the major museums in the United States and had solo exhibitions in the Midwest and Southwest.

Joseph Fleck Jr. posed for The Little Cowboy and remembered the chaps he wore: “When I was in the second grade in Taos, the day after Christmas vacation ended, all the little boys showed up in class wearing brand new leather cowboy chaps. We were all asked to stand up and do a show and tell before the class. When it was my turn, I said there was nothing further for me to say because my chaps were better than any one else’s chaps in the class. Before I could take my next breath, utter pandemonium broke loose in the class, and the teacher was forced to abruptly end show and tell.”
