Mary Magdalene is at prayer before a book and a crucifix which is held by an angel; the jar containing the ointment with which she anointed Christ is in the foreground. She appears again in the right background reading in a cave in which, according to her legend, she lived for 30 years. The picture was probably painted in about 1520.

- Artist Biography: Cornelis was active in Bruges from 1512 and died in 1531. There are many indications that he ran a large business as a painter and was probably also a dealer in pcitures. He was responsible for a triptych of the Coronation of the Virgin commissioned by a Bruges Guild in 1517 and delivered in 1517. The central panel survives in Bruges (Church of St James) and the faces, documented as his work as a result of a lawsuit, provide evidence of his style as a painter.
