The New Testament relates that Judea's King Herod was aghast when he heard the prophecy of a child born in Bethlehem who would become king of the Jews. To forestall this, he ordered all the baby boys under two to be killed. The artist has portrayed the massacre as a wild nightmare of naked men, desperate pleading women and wailing infants.
