The Mechanics' Institution was built in 1853-5 to designs by London architect Edward Roberts. It was enlarged in 1892-3 by Brightwen Binyon. Situated at the heart of Swindon's Railway Village, the building provided accommodation for the cultural and educational wellbeing of workers employed at the nearby Great Western Railway Works.
