The artwork being presented this year on the marble wall sets apart from the standard impressions one would hold towards a flat painting. The new first prize recipient of the 2008 Taiwan Ceramic Biennale, Chu Fang-Yi, allows the ceramic medium to stray away from the tradition with a new approach, and yet at the same time, the stable and clement natures of clay are still maintained. The “Objects” guide us to trace back to the first mode of communication for man-kind, the imageries. The written languages of man-kind have derived from images, and in the beginning, each image represents a certain meaning, and it is deciphered by the communal experiences and memories that the community holds together. These “Objects” are the artist's various observations of the society throughout his personal life journeys, and he has transformed them into a visual diary that contains a profound memory, a moment of imagination, and perhaps feelings of de ja vue. The audience can use his or her personal emotions to connect with the art and to feel the limitless possibilities that the pieces may bring to you.
