Built in the 1840s as the Great Western Railway Chief Mechanical Engineer's and Drawing Office, the building was enlarged in the 1870s and in 1903-8. In 1994 the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England relocated to Swindon, occupying the former GWR offices and constructing a purpose-built archive store to house the National Monuments Record.
