The old lighthouse at Flamborough Head was built in 1674 as a business venture by Sir John Clayton. It was never used. The octagonal tower is constructed of coursed chalk rubble with stone dressings and has a brick parapet. The lighthouse proved uneconomical to run as voluntary dues from passing ships proved inadequate.
