These paintings by Peter Brandes (born 1944) hang in the Liberal Party's group room. His point of departure was ancient Greece and Christianity – the foundations that modern Western culture stands on. The painting in the middle, 'The oracle of Delphi', hangs opposite the seat of the chairman of the Parliamentary Liberal Party. Is he an oracle or is he capable of listening to the oracle, which could be interpreted as a kind of forerunner for modern political advisers or spin doctors? Decoding the oracle's declarations in ancient Greece required a good deal of imagination, insight and interpretation. The same could be said of present-day politicians, who often find it very difficult to interpret the will of the people and even more difficult to make long-term plans for the benefit of the country.
