The Orchard

João Peralta’s painting, The Orchard, was a work that was completely integrated into the modernist currents of its time. It represents four women with a relaxed appearance, who are sharing some fruit between them. In the background is an indistinct rural landscape. The slightly asymmetrical composition has, at its centre, the figure of one of the women, depicted in profile and wearing a white blouse that contrasts with the green of one of the pieces of fruit. The faces of the remaining women, who are looking directly at the observer, are, however, very expressive.
