Samuel Parrish's collection in Southampton, NY, aimed to educate and "...illustrate or represent the history,biography, and art of Greece, Italy, and England..." (Samuel L. Parrish, from the catalogue). Many of the objects in the museum were reproductions of statuary found in Florence and Venice, Paris, and the United States. In the 1950s, the museum began including American artists, including some painters who worked in the area, seen as important by the local President of the board of the musuem, Mrs. Littlejohn.
