This paper sent to the Royal Society by Benjamin Franklin describes his experiment with a kite to test the conductivity of electricity from lightning. The experiment, performed in June 1752 in Philadelphia consisted in using a wet string to conduct the electricity while the end of the string was kept dry for insulation.
