The USS Polaris sailed from New York in 1871 in search of the North Pole. Stuck in ice in Smith Sound in October 1872, 19 crew members and Inuit guides abandoned ship, the remaining 14 following suit later. (All survived.) Bradford’s interest in the arctic was inspired by the disappearance of and search for the 1845 Franklin expedition given such high profile in the 1850s.
