Martha Clarke created 'Nocturne' in 1978, when she performed it herself.

“'The Politician | Peeling the Onion' - a solo created for Gérard Lemaître - considers the numerous characteristics or personalities that combine to create the persona of a single politician; one whose altruist motives have been devoured by the overwhelming desire for the power of elective office, a position to be acquired at any cost, through any conceivable ploy or masquerade. As the 'skins' of personalities are stripped one by one to reveal an increasing pathos and desperation, the question is raised of the existence of 'a man' underneath the layers of illusion.”
