Like many secular books of the period, this copy of Concerning the Fates of Illustrious Men and Women opens with an image depicting the presentation of a book to a patron. The presenter kneels to the right, offering the blue-bound volume to the king on the left. The identity of the figures remains unclear. The rubric below the image reads: Cy commence le prologue du translateur du livre de iehan boccace des cas des nobles hommes et femmes (Here begins the translator's prologue to the book by Giovanni Boccaccio concerning the fates of illustrious men and women).
