When Governor Phillip first arrived at the settlement of Rose Hill (Parramatta), a military enclosure (known as a redoubt) was established next to the Crescent to protect the 21 people who travelled with him (11 soldiers and 10 convicts). It was built in 1788 and contained a provision store room and barracks. This building was not intended to last and by December 1790 it had already fallen in to disrepair.
