The Royal Double Bethrothals

Salomon Koninckc. 1642

Skokloster Castle

Skokloster Castle
Skoklosters, Sweden

Signed SALOMON KONINCK F. The painting possibly depicts the double engagement between Duke Frederik (1471-1533), later Frederik I of Denmark, and Anna of Brandenburg (1487-1514), and Kurfurst Joachim I and Elisabeth, the daughter of King Hans.

The painting was part of a series of paintings depicting great scenes of Danish history comissioned by Christian IV of Denmark for Kronborg Castle. It was taken as war booty by Carl Gustaf Wrangel on 6 September 1658. Several of these paintings were deliberately taken by the Swedes as an act to deprive the Danes of their history. Three other paintings from this series can also be viewed at Skokloster Castle today.
