'The ruins of Kidwelly Castle, from the south, from whence was its principal entrance. It has been a castle of great strength. It is on commanding ground above the Vendreath Vawr River. It was built by Maurice de Londres, Son of Wm de Londres, who was one of the 12 Norman knights who conquer'd Glamorganshire. It has lately become the property of Ld. Cawdor. Carmarthenshire.'

John 'Warwick' Smith (1749-1831) was amongst the most famous watercolourists of his day. Between 1784 and 1806 he frequently visited Wales and became increasingly enchanted by the country. The National Library's collections contain 162 of his watercolour works which are based on his travels in Wales.
