"The speaking letter from the front"

During the Second World War, the German Red Cross offered to dispatch "audio military letters." The material of the metallophone record was aluminum, covered with a layer of cellulose nitrate. This record was lighter and more flexible than a shellac record. It weighed less than 3.5 ounces.
