The Assembly Rooms was built in 1881. Its construction was funded by the wealthy benefactor Sir Spencer Maryon-Wilson. Despite receiving damage during the Second World War, the hall has only seen minor alterations. The interior retains its original plan and stage.

The Assembly Rooms was listed Grade II in 2018.
