The Colossi of Memnon guarded the entrance to Amenophis III's mortuary temple, perhaps his largest personal enterprise and his architect's masterpiece. It was destroyed in a great earthquake in 27 A.D., which also cracked the Colossi themselves. The statues, which are 65 feet tall, the height of a five-story building, both represent Amenophis III.
