The great argus is rather inconspicuous – unless it is the mating season. The male spreads out his huge feathers and shows off the colourful iridescent eyespots on the underside of the feathers. The most magnificent cock birds are favoured as partners by the hens and can thus pass on their genes to the next generation – this principle is known as sexual selection.
