The village girl

Goupil studied with Ary Scheffer and became a popular painter of genre subjects often dressing his figures in historical costume. He exhibited works at the Paris Salon from 1857 onwards, this example in 1878. The girl holds a prayer book, but a pentiment (ie a change by the artist which has become visible with time) seems to indicate that she once held some other object which has not as yet been identified.
