The waggon-loading post, Vaulx

The AIF Field Ambulance at Vaulx played a crucial role in transporting wounded soldiers to medical facilities a safe distance from the frontline during battles such as Bullecourt. In order to transport wounded soldiers in a timely fashion a Waggon Loading Post was established just behind the front line. From here Regimental Aid Posts (RAPS) would head to the front line and retreive wounded soldiers from the field of battle. These soldiers were then transported by motorised or horse drawn ambulance to a Dressing Station where they would be assessed by medical officers and prepared for transportation to the Casualty Clearing Station or Field Hospital where full medical services were available. Because they were required to enter the field of battle many Regimental Aid Post officers died in the course of their duty while Waggon Loading Posts were often within the reach of artillery and were regularly shelled.
