After the first four trumpets sound, Saint John sees an eagle flying through the heavens. The illuminator represented the eagle's words on a scroll clutched in its talons: Ve, ve, ve, habitantib[us] in terram(Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth). Each woerepresents one of the three trumpets still to be sounded.
