Kunichika was one of the old-style artists of ukiyo-e, a style of Japanese woodblock printing. His name is a combination derived from the names of his two masters - Kunisada and Chikanobu. He is known primarily as a designer of actor prints since one of his passions was Kabuki, Japanese theater. He was a regular backstage visitor where he spent hours making sketches of actors.
