This watercolor shows two soldiers of the 2/14th London Regiment (London Scottish) in a tent, with a third blowing on a small fire to heat two small cans. Beside him is a packet of cocoa and a packet labelled 'iron ration sugar'. The soldier blowing the fire flame is Edgar Osborne. In 1918 the regiment was in Palestine.
On the back it reads: 'This is supposed to depict me "Drumming Up". This expression is [...] boiling water for [...].' The sketch has been previously glued onto dark paper, probably in an album, and part of the text is obscured by remnants of the paper.
The artist, John Chaplin, has not been definitely identified, but may be Private Frank John Chaplin (1897-1918) of 'B' Company, 2/14th battalion of the London Regiment, who is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery.
