From 3 May 1970 until 11 January 1972, the Theatre was closed for renovations and refurbishment.
In the meantime, performances were transferred to the Little Theatre and Bath Theatre Royal. On 12 January the main Stage re-opened with a performance of the musical Trelawny by George Rowell, starring Ian Richardson. The event was extremely well-attended – with even the Lord Mayor of Bristol in attendance.
