Bolster or piling trams moved railway ties across the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway line from Sommerville, Texas to National City, California. A portion of the production process occurred in each state.
After the U.S. Civil War railroads expanded rapidly in Kansas. Traveling through the state on train was one of the safest and fastest ways to cross the country.
