"Modern Times" portrays the desperate financial conditions many people faced during the Great Depression—conditions created by capitalist industrialization. The gears filling the poster represent one of the most iconic scenes in "Modern Times": when Charlie Chaplin’s character is yanked inside a machine at the factory where he works. This was the last film featuring Chaplin's character The Little Tramp, who struggles to survive in the modern, industrialized world.
