Sevilla, Spain

Recomposed panel of 20 pieces of arista tiles with a central theme of a medallion with four pointed lobes and a plant motif in the centre and on the corners around the central medallion and inside border (guardilla) of interlaced branches. The motifs are in blue and gilt lustre on white tin enamel.

The origin of tile plinths may have several roots. From the material point of view the technical association with Islamic tile plinths is clear. Meanwhile, from the aesthetic point of view they are related with Hispano-Muslim fabrics used as wall hangings. As can be appreciated the compositions are similar: the base, the division into "sections" framed by small frieze tiles (adeseras) and thin ceramic border tiles (verduguillos), the horizontal bands with Kufic characters (which evolve into Gothic letters and then the height of geometric expression) and, finally, the finishes with crenels. These compositions were devised by the textile industry and were then followed by other systems of walls coverings in Mudéjar Spain during the 16th century, like embossed leather for instance. Other specific features from textile art are also used for the production of tile plinths, such as the variety of design, the richness of colours or the sumptuous gilding. This panel is a fine example of textile influences since, according to Pleguezuelo, the central medallion reproduces the subject of the "melagrana" design taken from 16th-century Venetian fabrics.
