This full-page woodcut introduces Francisco Alvares’ The Prester John of the Indies (Ho Preste Joam das Indias), a rare account of a Portuguese diplomatic mission of 1515 to the court of Ethiopian Emperor Lebna Dengel. Dengel was believed by many Europeans to be the legendary Christian king, Prester John. Alvares remained at the imperial court for six years, and produced the first detailed account of travel in Ethiopia.
