Tondo with the Nursing Madonna

1575/1599

Sevilla, Spain

Oval moulded tondo. On pinkish white enamel, somewhat translucent, it is decorated in blue, yellow, ochre and green. The subject of the Nursing Madonna, in which the Virgin Mary appears suckling the infant is abundantly dealt with in paintings. Because of the condition of the edge, it is assumed it was torn off from a larger panel.

The yellowy clay and the light yellow used in this piece are typical of Triana earthenware which shared techniques and artisans with Talavera during the whole of the modern age, and imitated the most important European production centres.
