The Korean Artist Project is a global online website which aims to promote Korean contemporary artists hosted by the Ministy of Culture, Sports, and Tourism of Korea and organized by the Korean Art Museum Association. KAP has launched with a three-year plan spanning from 2011 to 2013. At the first step in 2011, art professionals and critics selected 21 artists, and curators from 13 private art museums organized their virtual solo exhibitions. KAP would love to introduce a diverse spectrum of Korean contemporary art to the global audience. Through these efforts, KAP will play a significant role in the promotion and development of Korean contemporary art. Also, the KAP will become a useful platform, which will serve as a stepping-stone to create cultural exchange and global networks with diverse art people. Please visit www.koreanartistproject.com
  • Critic's Note: Cities, Masses and Individuals Reflected in Mioon’s Visual Works Mioon’s works visually present the physiognomy of cities in the form of a large crowd responding to a modern city. Mioon closely look at various aspects of city crowds and illustrate their everyday lives in which they internalize the flows of desire, anxiety and the sense of alienation in response to urban capitalism. In this sense, their works are somewhat linked to the thoughts of the German philosopher Walter Benjamin. As the place most representative of modernity, the urban complex, which encompasses urban buildings and spaces, the lives lived there and everyday lives of the metropolitan masses, is a recurring theme in Benjamin’s work. Just as he described in his documents on cities, numerous urban dwellers including flâneurs wandering around city streets, dandies with a strong sense of identity, ragmen and prostitutes in the backstreets, Mioon’s works visually present the physiognomy of cities in the form of a large crowd responding to a modern city. While Benjamin defined the city as a space of duality that is beautiful but at the same time filled with anxiety, the crowds in big cities in Mioon’s works are both the subjects and the objects of the experience of cities as the source of pleasure and hope and yet also of anxiety and despair. The team of artists is actively expressing their social views on contemporary culture by attempting the visual decoding of modern metropolitan spaces and invisible systems in existence within them.
