The towel is woven from fine linen and was handed out to the miners accepted into the dormitory. Cleanliness in the dormitories had top priority. The following instruction was printed in paragraph 7 of the house rules of the sleeping quarters at the royal coal pit from 1875: "The dormitory residents must also ensure that they keep themselves clean. Clothes must only be washed in the laundry room and the towel should only be used to dry your body and not for other purposes."
