Among the diversity of red grape varieties in the Douro, only 5 should truly be highlighted. First, because they are the most common among the vineyards and, second, for their exceptional versatility and how they have adapted to the Douro’s schist soils. The most famous of the varieties in this typology, the Touriga Nacional, is grown on shallow, gravel soil. The wines are concentrated, dark in colour and intensely fruity. The most common variety is the Touriga Francesa, producing subtle, aromatic wines, very fruity and intense, as well as excellent Port. Next, the Tinta Roriz produces wines that develop great complexity with age, and the Tinta Barroca, a sweet, smooth and perfumed wine. Lastly, the Tinta Cão, one of the oldest varieties in the «region and best adapted to the dry, hot climate, yet it is less widespread, due to its lower yield. This variety’s bunches are small and compact, producing a freshly acidic wine of a velvety texture (TAYLOR, 2013).
