"The Transfer of the Bells" is one of the reliefs created by Gregorio Español for the cornice of Master Mateo's stone choir, when it was remodeled at the end of the 17th century. The reliefs provide a strong narrative, depicting scenes from the story of Saint James.

Little is known about the artist, who created several works for Santiago de Compostela Cathedral. He is believed to have been born in Astorga around 1560, and worked with Bernardo Cabrera on the early Relics altarpiece in around 1630. This was possibly one of his final works, which was destroyed by a fire in the 20th century.
