Two children being treated by the "Kinderfürsorge" (literally: "Childcare") of the Reden pit. The "Werksfürsorgerin" was responsible for providing medical assistance and care to the children of miners. She also supported the family in other matters of care and offered her aid for the submission of official requests and applications. The smog lingering above the region placed a heavy strain on children in mining regions. One treatment option at the time was radiation with infrared rays to provide the children with additional light and warmth. The children wore protective goggles for safety reasons.
