This large tapestry shows various people from classical and biblical history. They are all known for displaying 'fortitude', or courage in the face of adversity. The design was one of a series of 'Triumphs' of the seven virtues. These are divided into 4 Cardinal Virtues (Prudence, Justice, Fortitude and Temperance) and 3 Theological Virtues (Faith, Hope and Charity).
The tapestry may originally have been in a Spanish collection. The Latin inscription along the top boarder can be translated as
'Valour matches intrepid hearts against adverse perils. Likewise, salvation accepted from death pleases.'
