Museu Histórico Nacional
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Vertical object. Cotton wool glued to the top as a hair. In front of the trunk, a small triangle with an inverted base simulating the face. Part corresponding to the peeled chest, painted white and decorated with body paint (geometrical pacu fish) in black. The trunk of the kuarup is used in a funerary ritual, composed of several events, in which a dead chief is honored. The trunk symbolizes the dead man, whose soul becomes free at the end of the ceremony. Itapaka is the name given to the white band that simulates the chest and the drawings that cover it. The white color results from a thick layer of tabatinga (white clay), and black from a mixture of charcoal and mavu milk. This trunk is ornamented by: vertical headband in the upper anterior part, front band, vertical headband in the upper posterior part, necklace, pair of armbands and six bands formed by loose cotton threads.
