Dahea Sun recreated xiapi, a ceremonial vest for Qing noble women, by connecting tube-typed circular units. A vinyl-like new material was used, which is soft but durable. Sun’s <tube series> is a type of soft sculpture because it used soft material. Tube units of loose circles are pliable and can change their forms. Sun connected all these units to represent a modernxiapi. A Noble woman in Qing dynasty wore a rank badge which signifies her husband’s rank, and hapi also had a rank badge on it. The difference between historical and modernxiapi, is, the Qing hapi emphasized the wearer’s authority while Sun’sxiapifocuses on the material’s soft property.
