The immense varieties of flowers are emblematic of the rhythm and order in nature. In literary art, flowers have been depicted as objects of appreciation as well as vehicles of complex symbolism. Therefore, flowers have long assumed a prominent position in the development of Chinese art. These thinly-potted cups are painted in an elegant and delicate manner with flowering plants and trees, each characterizing a particular month of the year. Outline drawing is generally in black and various minor plants, rocks and water are represented in underglaze blue or enamels. Each cup bears on the reverse side a poem in blue, followed in each case (except the twelfth) by the seal: shang ("to appreciate").

  • Description and appreciation of each month of the year: 1st month: prunus Its white beauty is held by the snow on the tree, its fragrance wafts through the branches.2nd month: apricot blossom Its fragrance blends with the scent of nocturnal rain, the beautiful colour stands out in sunshine or in mist.3rd month: peach blossom The blossom sways in the wind when the swallow returns from the south, it is the season in late spring when farmers return to their fields.4th month: tree peony At dawn its ravishing beauty claims the jin zhang's share of the dew; at dusk, its fragrance entices the wind to blow through the Jade Hall.5th month: pomegranate Its colour dampened with dew is reflected on the beaded curtain, the breeze scented with its fragrance is shielded by the powdered wall.6th month: lotus Its roots are like jade, unsullied by mud, like pearls are the dewdrops caught on its heart-shaped leaves.7th month: rose Unlike a thousand other flowers that bloom and perish, it alone blazes red throughout the year.8th month: osmanthus Its branches are nurtured over endless months, when they are laden with flowers, surely it's autumn.9th month: chrysanthemum A thousand years ago, a white-garbed attendant brought wine (to Tao Yuanming), throughout his life (he treasured) the fragrance of the chrysanthemum.10th month: cymbidium Its delicate fragrance pervades the spacious palace, stirring thoughts of the far capital. 11th month: narcissus The spring breeze blows playfully over the rose, heralding a clear day, in the light of the moon the narcissi are massed on Dati. 12th month: wintersweet About the golden blossom and green calyx clings the chill of spring, rare among the flowers is its yellow colour.
