The instrument has a varnished wood handle, a brass frame that is painted black, and glass lenses/mirrors. Graduation marks (in feet) are shown in white along the lower arc of the frame. A metal label on the upper part of the radius arm shows "Stadimeter, U.S. Maritime Commission, Ser. No. 2549-1942. Schick, Incorporated, Stamford, Conn., U.S.A." The instrument is contained in a square-shaped box that is made of teak wood. The box has brass hinges, two brass latches, and a brass handle. A metal label above the handle shows "Stadimeter, U.S. Maritime Commission, Mfd. By Schick Incorporated, Stamford, Conn., U.S.A." The number, "2549," is handwritten in black ink on the top of the box. The number, "72.012," is carved in the wood panel on the hinge side of the box. An "Operating Instructions" sheet is glued to the inside top panel of the box.
