Radiolaria is one of the most amazing protozoa. This is the SEM picture of the type specimen Canoptum spinosum Yeh. It is a siliceous skeleton of an oceanic planktonic protozoa. Canoptum spinosum Yeh is an endemic species of Early Jurassic oceanic strata in the east-central Oregon. This species was named by Dr. Kuei-yu Yeh, Associate Curator of Collection and Research Division of this museum in 1987. At least 60 radiolarian species have been found from the same calcareous nodule, among them 37 are new species described by Dr. Yeh. Some of them have been chosen in 2010 by the work group of International Jurassic Radiolarian Zonation as index fossils due to their easily identified character and cosmopolitan in nature, such as Pleesus aptus Yeh and Pseudoristola megaglobosa Yeh. Back to 1970s, the early developing stage of Plate Tectonic Theory, radiolarian fossils (the only fossil kind found in the deep sea sedimentary rocks) are one of the most important evidences to prove the movement of the plates.
