Berrueta's studies in Madrid led him towards a naturalist Costumbrism, where scenes are arranged to give the impression that the spectator has stumbled across the subjects in the midst of their everyday work. Nonetheless, his figures show a tendency for melancholic wistfulness and are often shown lost in thought, distracted from their labour. He also had a propensity for depicting children and interiors. A good example is In the Stable, an intimate composition purchased at the 1896 San Sebastian exhibition of painting and sculpture by the Provincial Government, from which Berrueta was receiving a scholarship at the time.
