This painting represents one of the most famous episodes of the Odyssey. On the foreground Ulysses’ companions, after drinking from a poisoned jug, are turning into pigs, while Mercury, with his winged helmet and caduceus, intervenes to remove Ulysses from Circe’s subduing glance. The serpentine line animating the composition and the light colours are reminiscent of Rococo aesthetics.
