A Very Beloved Child

Baths of Diocletian

Baths of Diocletian
Roma, Italy

The sarcophagus, destined to a child who died very young, briefly describes his short life. From the right side, a man and a woman sit on a chariot holding a newborn in their arms. At the center, under an olive tree, the baby is trying his first steps by helping with a toddle wagon and, just above the tree, the same baby, a little older, is playing with a goose. In the last scene, the chariot appears again and the baby, a little older, is sitting on his mother's knees, while a small winged genius marks the path toward the afterlife. 2nd century AD
