Underglazed Fritware Dish

The imagery on this dish is, at first sight, somewhat incoherent. What could the designer have being trying to get across with an angry-looking blue leopard with a bell on its neck, chained to a post, rather improbably set in a garden of roses, and carnations?

Chinese blue-and-white porcelain provides the answer to this riddle, as this piece appropriates an earlier Yuan dynasty (fourteenth century) bowl bearing the image of a mythical creature known as a qilin, set against a mountain backdrop. The Ottoman design has converted that fantastical animal into this leopard, and the trees and mountains into flowers. The use of a leopard, however, is apparently unique to this dish, and may reflect the Ottoman court’s interest in wild animals.

Leopards appear in the famous Süleymanname manuscript of 1588; their symbolic importance is shown in a painting of the Turkish hero Sinan clad only in a leopard pelt, fighting a fully-armoured Hungarian knight. It is perhaps worth noting that the Istanbul menagerie, known as the aslanhane (‘lion house’), was situated next door to the workshop which housed the court artists. This suggests that they would have been able to draw direct inspiration from the animals.

يقدم الخزف الصيني الأزرق والأبيض الجواب على هذه الأحجية إذ يحاكي هذا الطبق سلطانية تعود لسلالة يوان (القرن الرابع عشر) وتحمل صورة كائن أسطوري يُعرف باسم كيلين، مع خلفية جبلية. أما التصميم العثماني فقد حوّل ذلك الحيوان الخرافي إلى فهد والأشجار والجبال إلى زهور. لكن يبدو أن استخدام الفهد فريدٌ بهذا الطبق، وربما يعكس اهتمام البلاط العثماني بالحيوانات البرية.

تظهر الفهود في مخطوطة سليمان نامة التي تعود لعام 1588؛ وتتجلى أهميتها الرمزية في لوحة للبطل التركي سنان الذي يرتدي جلد فهد فقط بينما يقاتل فارساً هنغارياً كامل التسليح. وربما تجدر الإشارة إلى أن حديقة الحيوانات المتوحشة في اسطنبول، المعروفة باسم إسلانهين (بيت الأسد)، كانت تقع على مقربة من الورشة التي كانت يسكنها فنانو البلاط. ويُشير هذا إلى أنهم كانوا قادرين على استلهام أعمالهم من الحيوانات مباشرة.
