The DHR or Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in India, has been featured in a recently released postage stamp series of the UNPA or United Nations Postal Administration on 25th August 2021. The popular series will be available in UN’s New York, Geneva and Vienna stamp shops and are likely to be a valuable philatelic collector’s item.

Along with the Swiss Heritage Railway route of the Rhaetian Railway, through the majestic Albula Bernina landscapes, the charming blue steam locomotives of the Indian heritage train (also known as the Iron Sherpa), gains worldwide recognition and prominence through this stamp series. The particular stamp features a steam locomotive at the “Ghum” station - which is at the highest altitude in the route commanding a fascinating panorama of the Himalayan mountain range.

Waterways, Railways and Bridges underscore human values of connection through transport, which has outstanding universal value for humanity. Three beautifully designed prestige booklets in English, French, and German accompany the stamp series. The booklets feature colourful photographs and detailed information about these World Heritage sites. The stamp series was designed by Sergio Baradat of the United Nations Postal Administration.

World Heritage sites belong to all the peoples of the world, irrespective of the territory on which they are located. Heritage is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations.
