This is a sampler worked by Ann Ingham, aged 9 in 1839.
This is a particularly finely worked example and the text reads 'Love not sleep lest thou come to poverty'. The quote comes from the Bible - Proverbs, 20:13. The quote continues, 'open thine eyes, and thou shalt be satisfied with bread'. It is advice to get adequate sleep, but not to desire sleep beyond all other things.
